Who we are The Mission of Evergreen
Evergreen Heights is a community of believers committed to leading people to passionately follow Jesus. Through His word we discover His love and find healing and purpose for our lives. In dependence upon Him, we love and accept people from all walks of life. We invite people to enter into relationship with Jesus Christ, and empower them to serve and reach others with His love. We believe that God is calling us back out into our community.
To our church this will mean:
- Praying for the needs of our church and our community
- Cultivating relationships with those in need
- Empowering every member for service
- Sacrificing time, energy and busy lifestyles to serve Him
- Striving for accountability in our Christian living
Our Connections
Our congregation grew out of an initiative by Port Rowan Mennonite Brethren Church in 1975. In turn, people from Evergreen were led to begin a ministry in Port Dover in 1995 which continues as "The Harbour."
We are part of the Ontario Conference of Mennonite Brethren
and the Canadian Conference of Mennonite Brethren .
We also actively participate with other Christians and congregations
in our community through the Simcoe and District Ministerial, the
"We Believe in Simcoe" (WBIS) network and the Simcoe Community Opportunity Scan (COS) initiative.
These co-operative connections are very important to us but most vital are our connections with God and with one another.
Ministries Our nine ministry groups
In order to function effectively, we have developed nine ministry groups (plus Elders), each with particular responsibilities. Click on a ministry listed below and the
mini-pages at the right will provide a description of each one:
- Adult Discipleship Ministry
- Children and Youth
- Deacons
- Elders
-Evangelism
- Fellowship
- Management
- Missions
- Networking
- Worship
Adult Discipleship Adult Discipleship Ministries
The Adult Discipleship Ministry (ADM) has responsibility for developing those activities and resources that would contribute to the growth of adults as disciples of Jesus.
The ADM has oversight of:
- the Library
- Growth Groups
- Adult "Roots and Shoots" classes (a.k.a. Adult Sunday School)
- special book and Bible studies
- Moms and tots Play Time
- Men's and women's group studies
We also have a women's group who meet here on Mondays for Precepts Bible Studies. It is an independent group with some women of this congregation in regular attendance.
Children - Youth Children & Youth
Are children and youth important to us? Yes and you would see our interest reflected in the ways that we provide opportunities for them to grow and develop in a healthy environment.
The Youth Pastor and a team of approved workers lead a variety of activities for all ages--from nursery to high school graduate. Some activities are on Sunday mornings prior to and during worship services. Other activities are provided throughout the week.
Please check the special, dedicated web pages for more information about our children's and youth activities.
Deacons Deacons
The Deacons provide a valuable service according to the New Testament pattern.
While many people in the congregation are involved in service to members of the congregation and the community, the Deacons act in an official capacity on behalf of the church.
They assist people with particular financial and practical needs (e.g., food distribution, moving, visiting).
They are also responsible for preparing and serving during our monthly Communion services as well as collection of the benevolent offering.
Elders Elders
The Elders are the men who are responsible for the spiritual oversight of the congregation as well as setting or approving church-wide policy.
The Lead Pastor and Youth Pastor are included in this group.
They come together twice a month for regular meetings to address matters raised by any one of the nine ministry groups and to discuss the pastoral care of the congregation.
The Elders are also responsible for "casting a vision" for the overall future direction of the church and its ministries.
Evangelism Evangelism
We have good news to share and that is something related to evangelism.
This ministry group is responsible for activities that will express our faith and practice in our community. Those activities are bound up in evangelism, outreach and service.
Examples are Mission 33 (Every Home for Christ), "We Believe in Simcoe," Kid's Fest (in August), and a Christmas Day meal in the downtown.
Fellowship Fellowship
More specifically adult fellowship is something we prize. There have been so many wide-ranging activities (all optional) that we can't list them all here.
Examples:- Dinner Clubs, Breakfasts, Men's Golf Days, hikes, bowling, BBQs, (upcoming) Blue Jays game, ladies outings.
We aim to have fun times together as should any family!
Management Management
We believe that the church is people. Still, we have a building to facilitate our ministries and it is a blessing to us and to others in our community.
Management provides the primary lead in the stewardship of our building and property.
The congregation committed to a building project that led to an expansion of the sanctuary as well as to additional classroom space, an enlarged library, a new kitchen and offices.
Please come by for a tour ( where our building is located ).
Missions Missions
The Great Commission is at the heart of Evergreen as we lead others to passionately follow Jesus.
Our support and sending reflect the commitment we have as followers of Jesus go out to share His good news with others.
Each year we hold a Mission Fest that features many of the ministries and missions that we support financially and through prayer. These include: ACTS, Camp Crossroads, Extreme Response, Key Bible Club, The Gideons, MAF, MB Missions, Mennonite Central Commity/MDS, Norfolk Pregancy Centre, Ten Thousand Villages, and YFC "The Spot".
Networking Networking
The analogy of the church being like a physical body where each part contributes to the proper functioning of the whole is what Networking is all about.
This ministry group helps each church member to identify his or her spiritual gift and to find a meaningful involvement in the life and activities of the congregation.
As well, in the Spring of the year, this group is involved in an intensive undertaking to gather the nominations for leadership positions. With that information, vacancies of termed positions are filled and some members enter roles as LITs (Leader In Training).
Worship Worship
There is nothing more important than to worship our Creator God--Father, Son and Holy Spirit. A number of committed and talented worship teams lead us into a deeper experience of reflection, praise and worship.
As well, this ministry group co-ordinates the decor of the sanctuary, the assignment of greeters and ushers and the teams of sound and visual technicans that work with the pastors and worship teams.
Growth Groups Growth Groups
These are small groups that meet regularly for fellowship, sharing and encouragement in Christian growth.
For meetings, each group chooses the day of the week and time, the frequency and duration. The group may meet at the church building but often meets at a host home.
Growth Groups are "launched" at the beginning of the calendar year and in the Fall. Current Growth Groups will be taking a pause as we enter the Advent season and will resume in 2012.
Watch this page for the start up of new Growth Groups or
contact Carol Hiebert (519-428-1856) for more information.

Children The importance of children
The care and well being of children is a sacred responsibility--in the home and amongst the church family.
Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people, but Jesus said, Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 19v13-14)
During the week, we have a number of activities in which the lives of children will be nurtured. We also have a program in place ("Plan to Protect") that is a requirement for our volunteers and staff who are working in children's ministries.

Youth USB
We've coined this term, borrowing from the
world of modern hi-tech and reference to USB
connections.
A USB is a widely used plug-in connection that facilitates the exchange of information in a fast and reliable way.
We want to stay connected with our Junior (grades 6 to 8) and Senior (grades 9 to 12) Youth by communicating, listening and relating in meaningful ways.
Check out these Summer and Fall activities.
Resources Resources
There are a number of things that we can provide to help you and encourage you in your faith and life.
Evergreen has a library with a wonderful selection of books for all ages, videos and CDs.
Pastor Bret produces a weekly newsletter called"Growing Tips" that provides some reflections on the topic of the Sunday worship service. Messages from the Sunday worship service are available in PDF format for download. The current series on the Psalms of Ascent are available here.
There are a number of links to other helpful resources and websites. You can also subscribe to our weekly newsletter.
Library Library
The Library is a 270 square foot area containing over 3,000 titles including books, CDs, and DVDs. In addition, there are magazines and brochures.
Each person can have his or her own library card and this is used with the automated ResourceMate system to take resources out on loan.
Please visit and browse our library when you come on site. If you have any questions, ask for Vickie Stam, our church librarian.
Growing Tips
"Growing Tips" is a weekly newsletter written by Pastor Bret providing an opportunity for further reflection on
the topic of the Sunday message.
You can be added to the distribution list by sending an e-mail to Bret requesting this service. The newsletter is sent by e-mail around mid-week via Constant Contact. This ensures that it is "virus free" and secure in privacy settings. This is "permission-based" communication and you can remove your name at any time.
Newsletter Newsletter
"Cone-ctions" is a weekly newsletter announcing events and opportunities that we have within our fellowship and in our community.
Just like the evergreen cone has multiple seeds, so we provide bits of information in seed form. The important thing is that the seed is taken and nurtured to produce growth. We would want you to grow through meaningful involvement in our Christian fellowship.
The newsletter is conveyed by way of e-mail in a safe and secure format provided by Constant Contact . It is a permission-based distribution and you may easily unsubscribe at any time but we do hope that you'll choose to be "cone-cted"!
